THE PARISH OF LA ASUNCIÓN DE NUESTRA SEÑORA The Parish of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora, was built at the beginning of the XVII century, although it was enlarged for over different eras. Its plant has the latin cross form, with its dome and their lateral naves, being their walls made of masonry (1), although in some parts, like the west side of the church, the tower and the front door, we can see ashlars (2).It is located at the same place where the first church in Tomelloso was built in 1541, and then demolished in 1604.
The primitive Parish of La Asuncion was built in 1604 with an only nave. Later, the tower bell was built and was dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.
During the XVII century, several lateral chapels were built by devout founders and its nave was enlarged. At its head (3), the altar belonging to Nuestra Señora de la Paz was located. The tower was finished in 1689. In the XVIII century the main nave was increased its latin cross form with the transept (4) hence. Moreover, the baptistery chapel was built (1740) and the Nuestra Señora de la Paz altar was moved to a lateral chapel. In this century the altarpiece (5) was constructed as well. Finally, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was decided the patron saint.During the XIX century the layout of the church (6) was altered because of the link of a lot of chapels such as Jesús de Nazareno, San Antón, San Ildefonso, Santo Cristo de la Piedad… and the Nuestra Señora de la Paz and Nuestra Señora de la Piedad altarpieces were damaged during the change. In 1936 the entrance from Plaza de España was enlarged and during the Spanish Civil War, most of the images and altarpieces were destroyed as well as the parish archive. The bells were given to the Ministerio de la Guerra to found them, to use them as shrapnel (7). When the war finished, the Parish was open again. New images and bells were bought by means of popular donations.Nowadays, its façade (8) is being restored through private donations.
